Google Plans To Be Completely Powered By Renewable Energy

The Google logo is spelled out in heliostats (mirrors that track the sun and reflect the sunlight onto a central receiving point) during a tour of the Ivanpah Solar Electric Generating System in the Mojave Desert near the California-Nevada border February 13, 2014. The project, a partnership of NRG, BrightSource, Google and Bechtel, is the world’s largest solar thermal facility and uses 347,000 sun-facing mirrors to produce 392 Megawatts of electricity, enough energy to power more than 140,000 homes. What do you think? Is it time that Google adds a little green leaf inside the “oo”?

Right now Google is a year ahead of its schedule to switch over to renewable energy. It should be 100 percent powered by green resources by the end of 2017.

Google’s 13 data centers and offices require 5.7 terawatt hours of electricity each year. Basically, that’s how much energy all of San Francisco consumes in the same time period.

We are convinced this is good for business, this is not about greenwashing. This is about locking in prices for us in the long-term,” Marc Oman, Google’s energy lead in the European Union, told The Guardian. “Increasingly, renewable energy is the lowest-cost option. Our founders are convinced climate change is a real, immediate threat, so we have to do our part.”

Google is primarily run on wind and solar for clean energy. Major drops in the cost of each technology ― 60 percent and 80 percent, respectively, in the last six years ― has made both of these options cost-effective.

We know Google has deep pockets, which allows them to negotiate renewable energy purchases directly, something that average consumers like you and I don’t have access to.

It signed its first clean-energy contract in 2010, with an Iowa wind farm, and now funds 20 renewable energy projects around the world.

The Facts On How Much You Can Power Using Solar Energy

Do you understand how solar energy works? Are you aware of the many benefits it has to offer you? If you have answered no to either questions, or perhaps even just one, keep reading. It is important that you start understanding what solar energy can do for you as a residential or commercial property owner.

Your solar energy system needs to be exposed to the sun at all times. Most homeowners have their solar panels installed on their roof but you could also have some panels installed on your front lawn. Do not hesitate to cut a few trees to avoid shadows and have a professional help you determine the best place for your panels.

Changing your current energy system over to solar energy is a smart idea. Installing solar panels requires a substantial investment, so years may pass before the panels generate sufficient savings to cover your cost. It is a good idea to wait until you are a homeowner and intend to stay put before investing is solar energy.

Before purchasing solar panels, check the track record of the company that is selling them. Many panels come with lengthy warranty periods of up to twenty five years, but this warranty is only good if the company is still in business. Make sure to ask how long the company has been in operation and check ratings with organizations like the BBB before making your purchase.

Be sure that you choose a company that has a great deal of experience if you plan to have a solar-energy system installed. Installation is the most important factor in whether or not your system will produce the most amount of energy possible, and a bad installation could cost you thousands in repairs.

You can depend on solar panels. They don’t have moving pieces, so when you buy a system, you can rest assured that you will not have to fix anything or buy any new parts. It takes very little effort on your part to create enough energy to power your home, making these systems a very attractive option for most people.

One of the greatest benefits of solar energy is the fact that it will never run out. Short of the sun burning out, it will always be there to provide us power. Using solar energy is unlike any other energy source because it is a consistent power source and will be there until the end of days.

Before signing any agreement for installation of solar energy products, get at least three estimates. Once the estimates are in your hand, read each one carefully to ensure that the installation is up to your standards. Each estimate should include a time frame of completion, a list of materials and the estimated amount of labor charged.

If you are building a vacation, rental or retirement home in a rural area, solar power can make a lot of sense. It can spare you the cost of a power line being routed to your home. At the very least it can give you some power in the case of local grid outages, as rural areas have power restored far more slowly than what you might be used to in a city.

Check the regulations where you live prior to installing your solar energy system. A variety of laws are likely in place. You would not want to install your system, then find out later that you have to take it down.

It is a wise decision to have read this article. Solar energy has something to offer everyone, and at the end of the day, you only have things to gain by choosing solar energy. This article has helped you quickly understand the topic on the whole, but keep researching online for more information to understand even more.

Using Solar Energy Technology In Your Daily Life

Solar energy is quickly gaining popularity. Many people are now using it as a viable alternative energy in their homes. If you are unsure as to whether solar energy is right for you, you’ve come to the right place. The following article will help inform you of all the benefits solar energy has to offer.

If you’re thinking about installing solar panels to generate your own electricity, make sure that the roof you’ll be installing them on gets plenty of good sunlight. Good sunlight occurs between 9am and 3pm. You’ll generate the most electricity if your roof receives full, exposed sunlight between those hours every day.

Don’t assume that solar energy involves full scale remodeling and ripping apart the roof. At a minimum, you can replace all exterior sources of illumination with solar powered lamps and light sources. They charge up all day to shine all night, except perhaps the predawn hours of the longest nights of winter.

Your home or business should receive at least five hours of direct sunlight per day to get the most from solar energy. Obviously more sun is better when it comes to solar panels, however if you get less than this solar energy can still be a viable option. If you are in an area where energy bills are sky high, solar might still save you money even if you don’t have the optimal sun exposure.

Don’t underestimate the importance of doing business with a reputable solar panel supplier. Although it may be tempting to purchase inexpensive panels from an overseas supplier, in the long run that may not be beneficial. Try to find businesses that will still be in operation in twenty years so that spare panels for your system will be readily available.

You should know the difference between off-grid solar energy and on-grid solar energy in order to figure out which is best for you. On-grid energy requires the use of the state’s electricity grid. On the other hand, off-grid energy means the home or business uses its own solar-hybrid or solar source.

You should attend renewable energy fairs or visit renewable energy demonstration centers located in your area. You will get a chance to meet with experts and learn more about solar energy and the different types of panels you can invest in. You will make a better decision if you are properly educated.

Once your solar panels are installed, you need to keep track of how much power you are producing and using on a daily basis. Invest in a quality monitoring system and look at the data as often as possible. If you notice your panels are not producing as much energy as usual, it might be time to clean them.

You need to find an efficient way to finance your solar panels. Most homeowners borrow some money from their financial institution so they can cover the initial costs and then pay this money back in small monthly payments. You can even set the monthly payments so they correspond to your usual energy bills in order to keep a balanced budget.

There are many factors that may affect the placement of solar panels and the angle for optimum sunlight. You don’t want trees blocking the sunlight from reaching your panels.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, solar energy is quickly becoming a popular form of alternative energy in residential homes. Hopefully, you now have a better idea of all the benefits it can provide you. Use the information you’ve just read to help you make the decision as to whether or not solar energy is something that could benefit you.

Solar Energy: Harnessing The Power Of The Sun In Your Home Or Business

Are you wishing that you didn’t have to pay for your energy in the long run? Looking into solar energy can help you identify how that can be your future. However, it takes having the right information in your hands in order to know what to do, so keep reading to find out more.

Switching to solar energy can save a ton on your electric bill. Solar power is absorbed through panels that are properly positioned on your roof. It is especially convenient if you live in an area that gets a long of sun. This will provide usable energy to your home in a much cheaper fashion than conventional electricity.

Are your energy bills getting a little out of control these days? If you are tired of paying costly energy bills then it is time to switch to solar energy. It might cost a little more upfront, but will ultimately end up saving you a ton of money in the long run.

If you own a pool, consider using a solar water heating system to keep it warm in the cooler months. Solar heating is much less expensive than electric or even gas heating, and it is relatively easy to install. In the first year alone, you can save about thirty percent over the cost of heating your swimming pool with electricity.

Get the records from your energy company on how much energy you have used in the last five years. You can then use this information to figure out exactly how much power you will need solar energy to provide for you home. Having the past five years is important so that you can see that some years you will need more energy than others.

Cleaning your solar panels does not need to be labor intensive. You want to avoid abrasive soaps at all costs, as they can deteriorate and even destroy your panels. So long as there is not caked up dust or bird droppings, frequent rinses with just hose water should be more than enough.

If you cannot afford a full-scale solar energy system, consider investing in a smaller one. Some vendors offer small systems designed to power a water heater or a generator. This small investment should help you save money within the next few years and you can easily expand your solar energy system by powering more appliances with solar panels.

The benefits of solar power increase with each year as improvements continue to be made. But, some machines can utilize solar power effectively. Generators are perfect for black outs or camping, for example.

Always check the regulations in your particular area before installing solar energy systems. A variety of laws are likely in place. That’s the last thing you’ll want to deal with when the system is in place and you have to take it down later on.

Converting your whole house to solar power can be expensive. Before you commit, look at how much you can afford. The initial investment will be very large, but there will come a time when you will break even, then start realizing your savings. Work out the numbers so that you will know how it will affect your long-term budget.

If you lease solar panels to save the upfront costs, check the contract for the possibility of transferring the lease. If you sell your home or building that panels are installed in within the lease period, you want to be able to legally transfer the lease to the new owners of the property.

You have taken a good first step by reading more about solar energy and how it can benefit you. Now, it’s time to devise a plan to implement solar energy in your home or business so that you can realize those benefits further. Keep in mind what you’ve read so that you can get started.

Solar Energy: A Smart Choice For The Environment

Finding reliable information about solar energy can be hard. Many people don’t know what it is or what is needed. Make sure you are aware of the costs and benefits before you sign any installation contract. Keep reading for more useful information about solar energy.

Solar energy through the use of solar panels can last up to 30 years. It is a long-lived use of energy and requires very little maintenance on your part. Since there are no movable parts, solar-energy panels don’t break or need repair. This can provide years of electricity bill savings.

Solar panel power is generally more efficient the more dense the panels are. High density panels typically come with a higher price tag; however, this higher cost likely means that your panel will generate more power for your home or business. If you are hesitating between different panels, compare their density to get an idea of how efficient they will be.

Try to choose solar panels that can have their angles adjusted easily. The angle at which the sun hits the Earth changes throughout the year. This means that the best angle to catch the suns rays can be very different between summer and winter. Ideally you want to at least be able to adjust the angle of your panels twice a year, however if you can find some that allow adjustments four times a year (spring, summer, fall, winter) that is even better.

Be sure that you choose a company that has a great deal of experience if you plan to have a solar-energy system installed. Installation is the most important factor in whether or not your system will produce the most amount of energy possible, and a bad installation could cost you thousands in repairs.

You should know the difference between off-grid solar energy and on-grid solar energy in order to figure out which is best for you. On-grid energy requires the use of the state’s electricity grid. On the other hand, off-grid energy means the home or business uses its own solar-hybrid or solar source.

Think about the money that you send to your power companies each month. How would you like to keep that money in your pocket? Changing to solar power will do that for you. After you pay off the initial investment, the money you used to pay to the power company will stay in your wallet.

If after installing solar panels you find that you are producing more energy than you need, you can sell the extra energy that you produce back to the electric company. This method will help you recoup the cost of your solar energy system’s installation and parts. Additionally, after you have recovered your costs, you will be making a profit.

If you want to help improve the environment, then utilizing solar energy for your home is one of the best ways to go. Solar energy is the best example of a green source of fuel because it is entirely renewable. Making use of this technology will greatly reduce your use of fossil fuels.

Contact your insurance agent to find out if a solar energy system could be included in your insurance policy. Expect your homeowner’s insurance premiums to go up once your system is installed and consider switching to a different insurance agency if you find that your premiums have become too expensive.

Many people aren’t really aware of how solar energy can benefit them. You should have a better idea of how you can benefit from solar power after reading this article. As you can see, switching to solar power will help you save money on the long-term and reduce your impact on the environment. Remember this information when selecting solar energy.

Great Solar Energy Tips That Can Work For Anyone

If you are thinking about using solar energy in your home or business, then you need to keep reading. There is much to consider, and you want to be fully aware of your path as you move forward. You want to know the benefits, and you want to know what to look out for as you devise your plan.

You can help the environment by heating your water with solar energy. For example, consider a solar water heater. Install either on your roof or in a particular sunny spot.

If you really want to see how your solar panels are working, keep a diary of the day to day energy output. Make a note if you are recording data on a particularly dark or shady day. Having this information can help you to understand how your panels work, and this can help you to optimize their performance.

Position solar panels on the east or west side of your home or business. Since the sun travels from east to west throughout the day, placing solar panels on areas of your roof that face north or south is a waste. You’ll get much better energy returns by following the same path as the sun.

As you prepare to buy a solar power system, don’t underestimate the importance of recommendations. Talk to everyone you know, whether they are friends, family members or even coworkers. You may be surprised by the number of people that have experience with these systems. They can tell you what they found out along their journey and guide you in the right direction.

Before you pull the trigger and buy a system, take a look at how long the manufacturer guarantees the product for. You want a fairly long warranty because the system will have to pay for itself over time and help you begin to generate a profit. Therefore, make sure the warranty is for at least 25 years.

Do your own research and find out if there are any rebates available for adding a solar system to your home. There are many local, state and federal programs that offer rebates for installing solar power in your home. Also check to see if you are eligible for tax incentives as well.

If you are thinking about having a solar system installed, make sure that your home or business is suited for it. Sometimes the layout of the roof will not accommodate the proper angle for maximum energy production. Talk to more than one company to ensure the contractor is being honest about your solar situation.

Purchase batteries to store excess solar energy. These batteries are similar to rechargeable batteries; however, they use the sun’s energy to power up the batteries. This energy can be used in the evenings and at night to help power your appliances, televisions and lighting requirements. These batteries are relatively inexpensive making them a great choice for the beginner.

There is really no reason to even consider getting a solar energy system if you live in an area that rarely sees the sun. This does not mean that a less than reputable company will not try to sell you a solar system though. If your roof does not receive at least 6 hours of full sunlight per day, you should not consider solar power.

You should feel better prepared to start concocting your solar energy plan to help the environment and save yourself some money. With the tips that have been discussed, you should now feel like you have what you need to get started. Use the advice you’ve learned, and you will be reaping benefits sooner than later.

Whether you want to go hiking, head for the ballpark, take in some of our nation’s great historical sites, or relax on the beach, you’ll want to do that in a clean safe environment. To keep the Maryland environment looking good, renewable energy like solar power is the word. Here’s what the Maryland legislature has been working on to make that an affordable reality.

Maryland got an early start using renewables. A 2001 law mandated six percent of government building electricity come from renewable sources. That was one of the first government mandated renewable targets across the country. In 2010, all state buildings reduced their energy usage by 15% from a decade prior. Much of this momentum can be attributed to Maryland legislature establishing a strong renewable portfolio standard (RPS).

Getting Solar Panels in Maryland is becoming much more common and you might have noticed that some of your neighbors have made the switch.

The Ultimate Guide to Solar Panels

The Ultimate Guide to Solar Panels

All of the energy on the Earth comes from the sun. In most cases, we get that energy indirectly. Plants use the sun’s power to grow, and we use the plants or the animals that eat them to get power, often after they have spent a few million years turning into oil.

That’s not very efficient, so there are plenty of people who prefer to cut out the middle man and get their power directly from the sun. There are a couple of different ways to do that, but the only one that the average person can use on their own is a nice set of solar panels.

How Solar Panels Work

Solar panels aren’t nearly as complicated as most people think. The oldest ones are more than a century old, while the modern design has been around since the 1950’s. Most solar panels are made up of a large number of small cells, which are only a few inches long. A single cell won’t generate much power, although they do produce enough to power a calculator or other small device. When a bunch of the cells get hooked together, they can easily provide enough power to keep a whole house running in a reasonably sunny environment.

A solar power cell is made up of two layers of a material that conducts electricity. There have been a few different materials over the years, but almost every model cell uses impure silicon.

The impurities in the top layer give it a negative electric charge, while the bottom layer’s impurities give it a positive charge. The different charges create an electric field that allows electrons to go from the top layer to the bottom, but not back up again.

When light hits the cell, it pushes electrons out of position. It’s easiest to picture this like a set of marbles. Imagine that the electrons in the panel are little marbles, while the sunlight is a big shooter marble. When the big one crashes into the little ones, they get pushed back.

The electrons in the top layer can go down without any problems, but opposite charges attract, so some of the electrons at the bottom will want to go to the top layer. Attaching the cell to a circuit will give them an alternative path that they can take to get back to the top, which creates an electric current. The electrons will keep moving as long as there is light to give the system a steady influx of energy. That movement produces usable electric energy for the owner of the panels.

Installation Types

Most solar power systems work on the same principles, but there are a lot of different types out there. Most people install solar power either choose to mount the panels on the roof of their house or to build a separate frame to hold them, but there are plenty of people who have tried weird and unique alternatives. Regardless of the exact form that the installation takes, they are all designed to get as much sunlight as they can for as much of the day as possible. After all, even the biggest system in the world is useless if it never gets any light.

On the Roof

Rooftop systems are probably the most popular solar power option. Most people like them because they don’t take up space in their yard. They will cover most of the average home’s roof, but most people aren’t using their roof space for anything else, so that doesn’t matter. They’re also very quick and easy to install, since the project does not take much more than bolting the panels onto the roof and running a few wires into the right position.

Recommended Providers: Click Here for a Free Quote

The downside to a rooftop system is that the roof isn’t always the best place to put a set of solar panels. Even if there are no trees or other objects that block some of the light that falls towards the roof, there are things that can make the panels less efficient. The angle of a solar panel is very important for determining how much sun it gets.

If the panel gets mounted on a roof, it has to stay at the same angle as the roof itself. That’s fine if the roof has the right degree of tilt to keep the solar panels productive, but the odds of having a perfect roof for solar are low. The direction that the roof faces can also be a problem. The optimal angle depends on the home’s precise position, but solar panels usually do best when they are pointed towards the equator. Panels that are pointing the opposite direction lose a lot of their value, although panels that are in an intermediate position can usually work.

On a Frame

People who don’t want to install the panels on their roof usually build a special frame to support them. Frame-mounted systems are often more efficient than their rooftop counterparts because they are almost always in the optimal position. The frames are a new construction, so they can face in whichever direction provides the most light. Naturally, they can also be built in whatever part of the property gets the most light and has the least shade. Many of the more advanced frames can even tilt the panels to make sure that they are at the best angle for every part of the day, but even the simpler ones can be tilted during construction to get a good angle.

The frames may win on efficiency, but there are reasons that they haven’t taken over the entire solar market. A powerful system will take up a huge amount of space on the property, and a lot of people don’t like looking at a big set of solar panels in their yard. The cost can also be a factor. The panels can’t take advantage of an existing structure for support, so the owner needs to pay for the entire frame. That construction also takes longer than putting them on the roof, especially if the workers need to run wire over a long distance to bridge the gap between the frame and the home.

Unique Systems

It is rare to see a solar power system that isn’t on a roof or a frame, but they do exist, and they’re getting more popular. Some stores are starting to mount solar power canopies over their parking lots. They serve two purposes, in that they provide some extra energy for the store and provide shade for the parked cars. A canopy is more expensive than most other solar systems, so most people are not going to want to install one in their home, but it’s an option for people who want to put some shade in their driveway anyway.

Portable solar panels are also getting more popular, mostly with people who are tired of watching powerlessly as their batteries die. They’re also popular with people who keep losing chargers, since the panels are big enough to be easy to find in almost any environment.

That size is also their main downside, since it can be inconvenient to carry a small solar panel around. They don’t provide a huge amount of power, but they’re strong enough to charge a laptop on a sunny day, and their cost is dropping to the point where more people are starting to look at them a s a sound investment.

Rules and Regulations

Where there are governments, there are rules. In most areas, there are only two broad sets of laws that matter when it comes to solar panels. There are government incentives that encourage people to buy solar panels, and there are access laws that ensure they have the right to do so.

Most of the incentives are tax breaks. Depending on the area, a person who installs solar panels can deduct some or all of the cost from their taxes. A few jurisdictions also hand out cash rebates, although those are normally temporary offers. There are even some power companies that offer rebates, so it’s always good to do some research before buying panels. A few regions also require companies to get a percentage of their electricity from green sources, such as solar power. Most of those areas give out certificates to people who produce green power, and allow producers to sell those certificates to power companies to meet that requirement. That can make a solar system profitable very quickly, so those laws are a huge asset to people who want panels for their homes.

Access laws guarantee that a home owner’s association can’t prevent a person from installing solar panels. These laws aren’t universal, but many areas do have them. In some cases, they only apply to panels that are installed on the roof or under other specific conditions. Always remember to check the details of the laws before starting any installation project to avoid an emergency meeting with lawyers.

The Price of Power

The ticket price of a solar power system and the actual price of the system often have very little in common. Including the cost of installation, the average cost of a solar panel is a little under ten dollars per watt. That will vary based on the type of installation and the current demand for contractors, but it’s a good rule of thumb.

That price does not take any discounts or incentives into account, and those can make it significantly cheaper. To find the real cost of the system, you need to subtract all of the discounts and rebates from the cost of installation. That means that the real cost of the system has as much to do with local laws as it does with the cost of making a solar panel or the work that it takes to install one. In many cases, they can cut the price of installing a system in half, but only for people who take the time to find all of the discounts and file the paperwork to claim each and every one of them. That takes a lot of effort, but most solar installation companies will help their clients to find the discounts. After all, there’s no better way to make a sale than by handing out discounts.

You don’t need to worry if those discounts are too small to bring the price down to an acceptable level. The cost of solar panels has been dropping for years, both because the technology has been improving and because the increasing demand has increased production. The trend shows no sign of changing, so people who don’t want to pay for solar panels at the current prices only need to wait a couple of years to get them for even less.

Finding Solar Panels

Once you know what kind of installation you need and the approximate price, you can start your hunt for solar panels.

Some people like to build small installations on their own, and there are kits to make that process easier. Doing the construction on your own can eliminate a huge part of the installation cost, although some government incentives are only available to people who hire professionals to do the job.

If you’re trying to save money, be sure to compare the savings that come from doing your own labor with the tax breaks or rebates to make sure that you will actually come out ahead.

If you want to install a bigger system, or don’t want to do the work on your own, it’s best to call in help from a company that specializes in solar panels. Since the installation needs to take the local climate into account to get the best results, always choose a local company that is familiar with those conditions.

If you have the luxury of choosing between multiple installers, ask around for reviews to make sure you get one that can do a good job.

Once you do that, you only need to sign the contract and wait until you can harvest the electrical bounty of the sun.

Here are three of those laws that can get you saving green while going green!

3 Solar Panel Laws in Connecticut That Will Save You Money

1) Public Act No. 13-298

Also known as An Act Concerning Implementation of Connecticut’s Comprehensive Energy Strategy and Various Revisions to the Energy Statutes, this law allows agricultural customers to run solar farms of up to 3 megawatts and sell the solar power they collect there to serve the needs of up to 10 other farms.

2) Net metering and progressive RPS

An RPS, or renewable portfolio standard, is a law that requires a certain amount of power be generated by renewable means by a certain date.

Connecticut boasts an RPS mandating that 7% of power in the state be derived from renewables by 2010, and 23% by 2020.
To achieve this, the state is providing incentives that will produce at least 30 megawatts of new residential solar production by the end of 2022.
The state is also providing for net metering for all sites up to 2 megawatts, which means excess energy you produce will be credited directly back to you.

3) Solar Home Renewable Energy Credits

To further incentivize the use of solar power, Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy is supporting a measure that aims to create the first market for residential solar energy credits for the state.

If implemented, this would further increase the amount that electricity customers are able to both save and be credited for.

So whether it’s through allowing agricultural customers to run solar farms and sell the solar power they collect there, providing customers with progressive RPS laws as well as net metering, or further incentivizing solar power through solar home renewable energy credits, electricity customers in the state of Connecticut have never had a better opportunity to save some green while going green!
